New Year Resolutions? Get Obstacles Out of Your Way
Resolutions can bring so much excitement. New Energy! New Life! New Hope! Then by the end of February it’s as stinky and humiliating as a fart in church. What happened?
One clue can be found in studying companies that grew too fast and collapsed under its own expansion. Set a pace that works for you. Build the infrastructure first, then act. Also if you want to achieve your resolution, call your accountability buddy weekly. Don’t ask someone to support your resolution who is financially or emotionally tied to you. It just muddies up the water.
Now let’s talk about having a resolution to find a better job. Be careful not to create emotional whiplash. Here’s an example: You had a great interview, then a second interview, and you get really excited; then you are not offered the job. Your excitement is premature. Get excited AFTER you have accepted the job to avoid the huge mood swings between a predicted victory and then defeat. After a few more of those defeats you may be tempted to give up. Yet this is not the time to give up. What really needs to happen is to send your unrealistic expectations to its room.
Instead of focusing on the outcome which you can’t control, Focus on what you can control today: A Daily Action Plan. Give yourself a break when you get mad or discouraged or worried.
Before I close, let me tell you a story. A presenter spoke about the damage you can cause when you get ahead of yourself. Imagine moving as fast as you can to achieve your goal yet there is a bungee cord attached to your back. You are almost to your goal when the bungee cord snaps you backwards causing you to be further behind than when you started. The bungee cord is caused by no infrastructure, no emotional support, and no accountability buddy. Put all that in place and the bungee cord magically disappears!
When you move forward with well-thought out, incremental steps, you give yourself a chance to emotionally integrate the change, and then evaluate what’s next. Remember effective change happens in a 24 hour a day increment. Map out your daily action plan for today only. There is much to be done. Focus on HOW you will live your life today.
Keep going, rest, replenish and even have a little fun. Repeat. Give yourself permission to take frequent time outs and you’ll see obstacles that need to be addressed. When you need acceleration to solve those obstacles, call me. 314-560-1088 Ask for Shary.
Build the infrastructure, have an accountability partner, and create a daily action plan that is tied to your goal. It’s not easy to put all that in place, and it’s not easy to self-diagnose what’s not working. You don’t have to do this alone. Take that dream off the shelf and let’s make it happen.
It’s a great investment in you!
